LAWRENCE Tory 1938-2024

London-born painter and printmaker née Victoria May Dennistoun who began painting in 1982 after raising her family. The daughter of a racehorse trainer she studied briefly at Morley College and painted mainly watercolour landscapes and some animal pictures. She has held solo exhibitions at venues that include Montpelier Sandelson, London, James Colman Fine Art and Thomas Williams Fine Art, New Bond St. London. Lawrence also exhibited her work at the Contemporary Art Society, the Hunting Art Prize, and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. She was winner of the Spink Prize for Painting in 1996 and 1998 and the Gainsborough House, Sudbury Drawing Prize in 2002.

Her group shows include exhibitions at Colnaghi, RWA and Flowers East. Tory Lawrence worked as a secretary for Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman and lived with artist Maggi Hambling. In 2009 she held a solo exhibition at the Star Gallery, London entitled 'Ancient Land and also exhibited at Montpelier Sandelson and in the Hunting Art Prize.
