MAITLAND Anthony Jasper 1935-2025

Illustrator born in Andover, Hampshire, whose childhood was spent in England with some time in the Far East and Germany. Maitland attended the West of England College of Art, Bristol and after, he graduated in 1957 with a National Diploma in Design. He spent two years in the Army, in which he became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Intelligence Corps. Maitland was awarded a Leverhulme Research Grant affording him a year of travel and study in Europe. For several years, he made a living from illustrating and designing jackets and 'Mrs. Cockle's Cat, one of his early designs, won him the 1961 Kate Greenaway Award.
