McLACHLAN Ed 1940-2024

Cartoonist born Edward Rolland McLachlan in Humberstone, Leicester known for his macabre sense of humour. After a local grammar school education he attended Leicester College of Art and then gained employment with a local print company in his home town. He sold his first cartoon to Punch in the early 1960's and never looked back. He drew cartoons for publications including The Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Mirror, The Spectator, the Oldie, Daily Mirror and Playboy. He also designed and wrote more than 300 commercial advertising films for firms such as Dunlop, Renault, Alka-Seltzer and Hamlet cigars. McLachlan also lectured at his alma mater from 1967-1970.

In 1980, McLachlan was named Cartoonist of the Year by the Cartoonist Club of Great Britain and during the last decade, the Chris Beetles Gallery has held regular successful exhibitions of his work. Examples of his cartoons are held in the collections of the Cartoon Museum and the British Cartoon Archive.
