Arthur Tooth & Sons

London based Arthur Tooth & Sons was a prominent art gallery founded in 1842 in Haymarket by Charles Tooth (1788–1868), a carver and framer. Charles Tooth's idea was to set up his son Arthur Tooth (1828–1900) in business and in 1866, they opened a new purpose-built gallery at 5 Haymarket. Until the 1880's, the gallery concentrated on 18th and 19th British paintings but gradually the stock was extended to encompass Old Masters and contemporary art. Other works of art and artefacts, such as china, furniture, and books, began to be listed in the stock inventories after 1892. A New York branch was opened in the early 1900's but closed in 1924. The gallery remained in the Tooth family until the death of Charles' great-grandson, Dudley Tooth (1896–1972) holding its final exhibition in 1974 when it closed.
