Bruton Galleries
Established c.1902, this short-lived gallery was as its name suggests located in Bruton Street, Mayfair, close to New Bond Street, London. The gallery staged important exhibitions including shows of work by Stephen Baghot de le Bere, Aubrey Beardsley, Jessie King, Alfred Aaron Wolmark, Evelyn de Morgan, Edward Gordon Craig, and Austin O. Spare. The gallery appears to have closed in 1907, but in mid-1908, the Baillie Gallery took over the premises where they remained until they ceased to trade in 1914.
Interestingly, an exhibition of works by Austrian artist Raphael Kirchner, (1876-1917) was allegedly staged at Bruton Galleries in 1915. The Sketch magazine struck a deal with the Bruton Galleries to publish Kirchner’s pictures exclusively in England. They were in postcard form and are today collectable in their own right. Of further interest is the fact that the gallery staged an exhibition in 1904 of photographs and drawings of the 'Discovery' Antarctic Exhibition and a catalogue relating to this sold at Bonhams in 2012 for £1500. It was possibly a record price for a 20th-century art catalogue at the time.
This gallery should not be confused with the Bruton Street Gallery which operated from No. 28 Bruton Street during and after the third quarter of the 20th century. It was run by Patricia Herrod. Any additional details about the gallery would be appreciated.
