Cooling Galleries

John Albert Cooling was born on March 20th 1859 in London, the son of John Cooling, restorer and art dealer. He was educated UCS London, South Kensington Schools and the Royal Academy Schools, where he was a medalist and exhibitor in 1880. He worked originally a portrait painter and restorer entering the art business in 1884. The eponymous galleries were located originally at 150 Southampton Row, 47 Fleet Street and from 1911 until mid-1970's at 92 New Bond Street when it moved to 37 Albermarle Street. The gallery merged with Newman & Co to become Newman & Cooling and eventually closed in the late 1980's. J A. Cooling was a member of the Guild of Blacksmiths and was admitted as a Freeman of the City of London on July 1 1909. He died on May 26th 1931 in Goring-on-Thanes, Oxfordshire.

A gallery with the identical name was operating in the early 1990's in Cork Street, London which catered for young British and Russian artists. It closed in 1993 and was in no way related to the Cooling Galleries or to Newman & Cooling. We would like to thank Ann Cooling Stuart for this valuable information.
