Gieves Gallery

A little-known gallery based at 22 Old Bond Street in London's West End. There has been mention of it sharing the premises (it had I think three floors) with the Arlington Gallery which had an identical address. Who established and ran the 'Gieves' is as yet unknown but it did exhibit some important artists as well as lesser-known practitioners. One of the earlier exhibitions 'Marine Pictures' took place at the end of 1920. It featured works by John Lavery, Julius Olsson, Arthur James Wetherall Burgess, Charles Pears and Norman Wilkinson. Other artists who were exhibited at this and other times included Harold and Gertrude Harvey.

The gallery also exhibited artists from abroad as can be seen from the attached poster showing the work of a Yugoslavian artist Nasta Rojc in 1926. Not restricting itself to paintings and conventional artwork, the gallery exhibited a solo show of Poole Pottery in September 1926. The Gallery is thought to have closed on Friday, June 26th, 1931 although I have found a mention of an exhibition entitled 'Flying Over the Empire' organised by Imperial Airways and held at the Gieves Gallery, Old Bond Street. According to Flight International Magazine, it took place in July, 1934.
