Hayward Gallery
Located within London’s Southbank Centre, the Hayward, which is now its official designation, was opened in 1968. On the visual arts side its remit is primarily to put on about four important contemporary art exhibitions every year. However past exhibitions have included Edvard Munch and Leonardo da Vinci as well as various French Impressionist exhibitions.
From its opening until 1986 it was run by the ACGB since when its management has been ‘in house’. The gallery was also for many years the home for the majority of the vast collection of the ACGB, which is now largely distributed to museums and art galleries across the UK. Recent contemporary shows have included the works of British sculptor Anthony Gormley and American minimalist artist Dan Flavin who employs coloured fluorescent light bulbs and tubes in his work.
