National Gallery of Scotland

The NGS built originally in 1828 houses a national collection of outstanding fine art spanning work form the early Italian Renaissance to works executed at the close of the 19th Century. Works by such iconic artist as Raphael, Titian, El Greco, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, Degas and Gauguin are to be found in its galleries. In addition the history of Scottish art can be traced through major examples of the work of Ramsay, Raeburn, Wilkie and McTaggart. In front of the building is the recently refurbished gallery of Royal Scottish Academy. Both buildings located at The Mound, Edinburgh were designed by the architect William Henry Playfair, but were separate until as recently as 2004 when a major project to link them by an underground extension was completed. In more recent times the National Galleries of Scotland has been created and comprises the Scottish National Gallery, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
