Penlee House Museum
Penlee House was originally built in 1865 as the home for the wealthy Branwell family. The house was purchased by the Penzance Borough council in 1946 along with the surrounding Penlee Park as a memorial to the dead of World War II. Three years later, it was formerly commissioned and opened as the Penzance District Museum. The responsibility and ownership of the museum passed to the Penwith Council in 1974. Ten years later Penzance Council took over the running and responsibility for the site.
Penlee House Gallery & Museum is the only Cornish venue specialising in the Newlyn School and early St. Ives School artists. It houses a magnificent collection of paintings that includes the works of Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes, Norman Garstin, Harold Harvey, Laura Knight, Walter Langley and Lamorna Birch.
