Southampton Art Gallery
Southampton City Art Gallery has a permanent collection of over 3,500 works, many of which are of international repute. In 1930 work began on building a complex which would house all council departments. The centre was designed by Berry Webber and incorporated space for the town’s public library and art gallery. The gallery opened to the public in 1939. The collection covering six centuries from the Renaissance to the present day, has rightly been deemed as of national importance by the UK government.
Artists in this collection include Rodin, Tissot, Maurice Utrillo of international acclaim backed by British artists who include Richard Eurich, Barry Flanagan, Spencer Gore, Maggi Hambling, Richard Long, Michael Craig-Martin, Douglas Gordon and Graham Sutherland.
