Worthing Art Gallery
Most of the works collected in the Museum's early years were by local Sussex artists or artists who had strong links with the county. The Sussex based gallery opened in 1908 and the collection comprised works that include paintings by Holman Hunt, Ivon Hitchens and Lucien Pissarro. In more recent times more contemporary works have been acquired that include sculpture represented through works by John Skelton, Philip Jackson, Dora Gordine and Anthony Stevens.
Worthing is noted for its print collection and boasts works by early exponents such as Robert Dighton, 1752-1814, Charles Knight, 1743-1826 and George Baxter, 1804-1867. Later practitioners like Ernest Stamp, Frank Short and wood engraver and illustrator Gwenda Morgan are also represented. Etchings and paintings by Camden Town artists are present and include works by Walter Sickert, Therese Lessore and Sylvia Gosse. Other 20th century artists represented include William Nicholson, Augustus John, Frank Brangwyn, William Orpen and Hubert Herkomer.
