York City Art Gallery
The building which houses the gallery opened to the public in 1879 for the second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition which had been influenced by the Great Exhibition of 1851. In 1892 it became known as the City Art Gallery. The gallery houses the important archive of material by York's best known artist, William Etty. In addition there are over 17,000 works on paper a collection begun in 1931 with the purchase of 1200 works from a local doctor.
Artists featured include Thomas Rowlandson, John Varley, Thomas Girtin and JMW Turner from the 18th and 19th centuries and works by the Sickert and the Camden Town Group. The 20th century is well represented by Edward Burra, John Piper, Julian Trevelyan, LS Lowry and David Hockney.
