Glasgow Boys
Both terms Glasgow Boys and Glasgow School were loosely applied to a number of Scottish artists working in the Glasgow area towards the end of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Their subject matter featured bucolic, mundane scenes in and around the Glasgow area.Neither was a formal organization and the artists themselves preferred to be known as the Glasgow Boys. In fact, the term Glasgow School confusingly refers to two distinct groups and styles, one of which was influenced by French Impressionism and led by William Macgregor. Other influential artists associated with the 'group' included Joseph Crawhall, E. A. Hornel, David Gauld, William Wells and Thomas and Thomas Corsan Morton. The other collective, which was led by the architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, produced a distinctive Art Nouveau style of painting using vigorous brushwork and a dazzling palette. The Scottish Colourists developed out of the Glasgow School.
