Primitives
The term can be used in differing ways. It describes either the art of cultures other than Western – such as that of the Oceanic or African tribal groups – or the work of Western artists, such as Gauguin, who derive their inspiration from such sources. Or it describes Western artists who work in an unsophisticated manner with regard to their use of colour, composition and perspective, and as such is interchangeable with 'Naïve'.
