Association of Illustrators

The Association was established in 1973 when a group of agents and the illustrators they represented grew frustrated that many clients did not return original artworks to their respective illustrators after completing a commission. They felt the need to set up a group to campaign for the safe return of these works. Furthermore, it is a non-profit making trade alliance committed to its members’ professional welfare and to the promotion of illustration. Its membership comprises freelance illustrators and agents, clients, students and lecturers.

Thus in 1973, an organisation of illustrators for illustrators was established. There are currently more than 1,800 members, including freelance illustrators and agents and the Association provides support and advice to members of the industry on a worldwide basis. Notable patrons, illustrators and members past and present include Quentin Blake, Terrence Dalley, Ralph Steadman, Shirley Hughes and Raymond Briggs.
