Bangor University

Located in North Wales, this University was founded in 1884 as the University College of North Wales. Art has been gathered since its early days, from several sources, but the collection owes its existence to many donations and bequests. Arguably the most important bequest was made by the former College Treasurer, the Welsh novelist, dramatist and poet Thomas Rowland Hughes in 1949. Paintings from his collection and a Trust established by R. R. Hughes form the core of this eclectic group of works numbering more than 300 items. Artists represented include John Aldridge, W.J.C.C. Bond, Robert Hunter, Will Roberts, Frances Hodgkins and Ethelbert White. In 2015, the museum was rebranded in a £2.4 million revamp. The name Storiel was added and chosen to represent the stories told by the historical artefacts on show and the oriel gallery, which showcases contemporary and historical art.
