British Council

The Council was founded in 1934, and its remit under the terms of its charter of 1940 was the promotion of a wider knowledge of Britain and the English language abroad. In addition to organizing visits and exhibitions by British artists to foreign countries, over the past sixty years the Council has built up an important collection of works of art including crafts and designs. The collection, started in the late 1930’s, has now grown in size to more than 8000 works covering all media and all aspects of British art and design of the 20th and 21st centuries. The collection has no permanent gallery and has been referred to as a Museum Without Walls.
