British Institution Scholarship

The British Institution for Promoting the Fine Arts in the United Kingdom informally known as The British Institution was founded in 1805 and ceased to operate in 1867. A private organisation formed to exhibit and to sell art by living and deceased artists it was also known as Pall Mall Picture Galleries or the British Gallery. It staged two exhibitions each year, one of the old masters the other of contemporary art. The Institution was driven more by the values of connoisseurship than those of artistic practice. After its cessation, the remaining funds went to the formation of awards known as a British Institution Scholarship.
