Gregynog Press
Sisters, Gwendoline and Margaret Davies established the Press in 1921 at their house, Gregynog Hall, located in Newtown, central Wales. During its twenty-year lifespan 1923-1942, it published 42 books, usually in limited editions of 250 copies. The Press came to prominence by producing books of the highest quality illustrated by the best artists of the day. With the advent of World War II the Press closed down and when it did reopen it slowly went into a decline. By 1965 it had gone into voluntary liquidation. Re-formed in 1978 under its Welsh title Gwasg Gregynog, the Press continues the traditions of its predecessors and in 2002 was registered as a charity. Artists and typographers whose work was reproduced by the Press included Robert Maynard and Horace Walter Bray who often worked together, William MacCance, Alison McKenzie, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Agnes Miller-Parker, Gertrude Hermes and later Kyffin Williams. The collection in Newtown boasts works once largely in the possession of sisters Gwendoline and Margaret Davies. Artists included are Sheila Fell, Olwyn Bowey, Dorothea Sharp, Gwilym Prichard, William Strang and Hugh Blaker.
