Pearson's Magazine

Established in 1896 and edited by its owner Cyril Arthur Pearson, (1866-1921) it was a monthly publication with discussions and features on literature, politics and the arts. Its elite contributors included Maxim Gorky, George Bernard Shaw, Upton Sinclair, H. G. Wells and Rudyard Kipling. It was the first British periodical to publish a crossword puzzle in February 1922. The onset of World War II saw the magazine's closure after more than 500 editions. 'War of the Worlds' by H. G. Wells was serialised in the magazine in 1897.

Artists whose work was illustrated included Edmund Blampied, Warwick Goble, Leslie Illingworth, Harry Furniss, Hilda Cowham and H. M. Bateman.
