Sphere

Sphere was a British newspaper founded in 1900 by Clement Shorter (1857–1926) who also started Tatler the following year. It was arguably in direct competition with the Illustrated London News who soon after launched a short-lived spoiler' called The Spear designed obviously to confuse the public. The magazine's most popular period was probably during World War I when over two hindered issues were published. During this period it changed hands and was purchased by shipping magnate John Ellerman. In all over 3,300 issues were published over a remarkable 64 years. Although it ceased publication in June 1964 a special memorial tribute was issued in December of that year to Sir Winston Churchill. He died the following month.

Artists who contributed included Henry Matthew Brock, Nell Cuneo, Montague Dawson, Fortunino Matania, Claude Grahame Muncaster, brothers Henry and Sidney Paget, H. H. Rodmell and Millar Watt.
