Tyne and Wear Archives & Museums

This is an ‘umbrella’ organisation incorporating virtually all of the publically accessible museums in the area surrounding Newcastle and Sunderland. There are currently twelve different locations each having their own unique collections holding a wide-ranging assortment of archaeology, art, history and natural science. These collections are not only of regional and national significance but in many respects are of international importance.

The art related establishments include Hatton Gallery, Laing Art Gallery, Shipley Art Gallery, South Shields Museum & Art Gallery and Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery, officially known as Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens. The non-art related collections are to be found at the Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum, Stephenson Railway Museum in Wallsend and the Washington Pit Museum plus several other locations.
