Coalbrookdale School of Art
The Coalbrookdale Scientific and Literary Institute began life in 1853 to give ‘the inhabitants of Coalbrookdale and the Neighbourhood, the means of acquiring useful knowledge on literary and scientific subjects'. Three years later, an art school was established and incorporated into the Institute, which was financed by the local Coalbrookdale Company. They also paid the fees of some of the art school attendees.
In 1928 the Institute was purchased by Shropshire County Council who relocated the technical and art colleges to the Walker Technical College in Wellington.
