Lancaster School of Art

In July 2024 Lancaster & Morecambe College celebrated 200 years of continuous technical education in the local area. The roots of this establishment can be traced directly back to the founding of the local Mechanics Institute in 1824, which, after several moves, eventually settled in the Storey Institute, on Meeting House Lane. Circa 1855-1856 the Mechanics Institute moved to the Storey Institute site and opened as the Technical School of Mechanics' Institute. In 1891, the premises were completely rebuilt and opened as the Storey Institute and 1909, the Institute premises were enlarged with the addition of an art gallery and library. Having relocated to its current site in 1963, the new College was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
