Manchester School of Art

The School was founded in 1838 as a School of Design in the first instance, by the support of a body of citizens and of a small Government grant and was re-designated a School of Art in 1853. In 1880 it relocated to a new purpose-designed building in Grosvenor Square, which still houses the Faculty of Art and Design. A Basic Design Course was introduced into the curriculum in 1940, probably the first such course in the country, and nowadays the subjects taught range from Architecture to Film Studies, although Fine Art remains a fundamental part of the syllabus. Notable past students include Adolphe Valette, Charles Cundall, L. S. Lowry, suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, and entertainers such as Anthony Sher, Julie Walters, Mick Hucknall, and Steve Coogan. Manchester Metropolitan became a Polytechnic in 1970 and a University in 1992.
