National College of Art & Design
Now located in Thomas Street, in central Dublin, the NCAD is regarded as a centre of excellence in the education of students in the visual arts in Ireland. Its origins date back to the middle of the 18th Century when in 1746 one Robert Ward ran a private school of drawing in the Irish capital which later became known as the Royal Dublin Society. From 1854 the institution was administered from London by the Department of Science and Art but in 1877 it was renamed the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art which was then administered locally. In 1939 it was again renamed and incorporated into the National College of Art & Design which effectively saw the demise of teaching at the RHA Schools. Past teachers and alumni have included writers W. B. Yeats and A. E. Russell and artists William Orpen, Sean Keating, Harry Clarke and Maurice MacGonigal.
