Swansea School of Art

The School of Art was founded 1853 is the oldest art school in Wales and also possesses the newest Faculty of Art & Design in Wales. Through its long existence, it has also been known as the Municipal School of Art and Crafts (1908-1922) and the Swansea School of Arts & Crafts (1923-1951). Throughout its history, the school ran a large variety of day classes and evening classes covering disciplines that included decorative metal work, wood carving, gesso, plasterers, pottery, figure modelling, stone carving, art classes, drawing, painting and classes in life drawing. Most of the pupils were amateurs when they joined but through the teaching they received and their abilities went on to become professionals in their chosen field.

Principals, staff and alumni have included William Grant Murray, Kenneth Hancock, James Govier, Ceri Richards, John Addyman, Alfred James, Will Roberts, Denis Mitchell, Vincent Evans and Evan Walters. Today the School forms part of the University of Wales Trinity St. David (UWTSD) with campuses in Swansea, Carmarthen, Lampeter and in London.
