John Moores Liverpool Exhibition

The John Moores exhibition showcases the best new paintings produced in the UK today and attracts a broad spectrum of artists. The exhibitions provide substantial cash prizes and their purpose is to encourage the talents of young British artists, while, at the same time, providing the local Merseyside public with an opportunity to view some of the best in contemporary painting and sculpture. No preference is given to levels of experience or particular practices of painting. The work is selected anonymously from an open submission by the jury, who also award the main prizes. Held biannually since 1957, acceptance is mainly by selection and is normally restricted to painters and sculptors working in the British Isles. However, entries from other countries are included on occasion, as well as work shown by invitation. The latter may be eligible for prizes, although more often invited work is included hors concours. Prizewinners include Roger Hilton, Jack Smith, Henry Mundy, Patrick Heron, Victor Pasmore, David Hockney, Euan Uglow and more recently Andrzej Jackowski, John Hoyland and Bruce McLean.
