London Portrait Society

Founded in 1928, this somewhat obscure Society seems to have functioned only spasmodically during the inter-war years. It held its first annual exhibition at the Burlington Galleries, located at the rear of the Royal Academy. Australian-born George Coates and fellow countryman James Peter Quinn were founder members. It would appear that it was largely populated by “Commonwealth” artists from Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Annual exhibitions were held at the New Burlington Galleries, London, the last seemingly in June 1940.
