Manchester Society of Modern Painters

As yet little is known about this Society which was probably formed a little time before World War I with some authorities suggesting 1912. During the 1920's it was based in central Manchester at Blackfriars Street and in 1925 L.S. Lowry was known to have shown with them. During the same period New Zealand born artist Francis Hodgkins while designing for the Calico Printers Association, also showed there as did Manchester-based artist and teacher Adolphe Valette. Valette is credited with having founded the Society circa 1912 with locally based Mancunian artists Rowley Smart and the unknown Margaret Nicholls. Other members and exhibitors included Emmanuel Levy, Iain Grant, Karl Hagedorn and Peter O'Brien.
