Royal Society of Portrait Painters
The Society was founded in 1891 by no less than 24 artists who, irritated by the then closed-shop attitude of the RA, joined together to form a society devoted totally to the art and development of portrait painting. Some of its founding members included the most distinguished portraitists of the time, Sir John Everett Millais, George Frederick Watts and James McNeill Whistler being amongst them. In 1895 it was granted the title of “Royal”. Distinguished exhibitors have included Sir Hubert Herkomer, Sir George Clausen, Sir William Nicholson, Augustus John and Dame Laura Knight to name but a few. Its annual exhibition is open to non-members and is held in the spring at the Mall Galleries. Work in any medium other than miniatures or sculpture can be submitted for selection.
