Hunterian

William Hunter after whom the museum is named, bequeathed in 1783, his personal collection of art and antiquities to the University of Glasgow. He further bequeathed £8000 for the construction of a suitable museum. It was opened to the public in 1807 and is therefore Scotland’s oldest museum. It houses superb examples of works by the Glasgow Boys, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Scottish Colourists, Fergusson, Peploe and Cadell and perhaps the most important collection of 19th Century artist James McNeill Whistler anywhere in Europe. The collection is also home to a number of Old Master paintings including the work of Rembrandt, Chardin and Stubbs.
