Baynard Press
This publishing house began life when started by F. Sanders Phillips in 1894. Frederick Sanders Phillips, (1851-1914) was born in Camberwell, Surrey, (now London) but nothing is known of his early life or when and where he learned his printing trade. The Baynard Press lasted in its original format until 1960 when it took over Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd and became known as Sanders Phillips & Co.
F. Sanders Phillips was a pioneer exponent of colour lithography and employed highly skilled craftsmen such as Thomas Griffits, (not Griffiths) who did much to advance the use of colour lithography. The Press printed many of London Transport’s pictorial posters and became one of the largest and most technically accomplished printing firms in Britain. They had machinery and plant resources that allowed them to produce large-scale poster images for the advertising of London Transport and various other organisations. Baynard Press also maintained a degree of technical excellence by employing Griffits and other master craftsmen. At the outbreak of World War II, the firm's entire resources were made available to support the war effort. The Victoria & Albert print collection houses 123 posters printed by Baynard.
