Lowestoft School of Art
Founded in 1881, its first art classes were held at St John's School Town Hall and its first head was Robert Clough, (1847-1914). In 1891, the School relocated to the nearby Town Hall and in 1898 new permanent buildings for the Technical and Art Institute were shared with the new High School at Clapham Road, Lowestoft. In 1904 Grace Musson (1885-1960) was appointed as a Pupil Teacher of Art and in 1923 she was appointed Principal of the Technical Institute and School of Art. On her retirement in 1946, she was succeeded by Eleanor Doris Varley when the School of Art was split from the Technical Institute. In 1965, the Lowestoft School of Art merged with the College of Education and in 1995 their Church Road buildings were closed. Soon after, Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth Colleges begin to collaborate with Suffolk University Colleges to establish degree courses, and in 2017 Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft Colleges merged to form the East Coast College.
Staff and alumni include Royal Academician Jeffrey Camp, Gerald Rose, Tom Hudson and David Poole.
